Quick Update

O happy day! All of the kittens have homes. My dad and Stepmom decided that Ursula and Spot should be together and they will be taking both. Little Tanner is reportedly walking about, albeit like a drunkard. He's going to stay with us. All is well in kittenland. I hope all is well for you all, too.

Kitten Update

I am in Mexico studying Spanish while Jason stays home with the remaining kittens, but I thought I'd put up a quick update on KittenGate. We have one who kitten still needs home. He's an orange tabby and an angel. We (somewhat ironically) call him Spot (pictures in the post below) and he is alternately a brave explorer and a total lap cat. When I was home and working on the computer, he liked to hop up on my lap and curl up for a nap. If you or anyone you know is interested in adopting Spot, please contact me at saradozier@hotmail.com.

Ursula, the black beauty, is going to live with my dad and stepmother who have a very cat-centric home. She will be wonderfully happy there. They are changing her name (to what I don't know) despite the fact that she TOTALLY looks like a bear.

Hops and Barley (nee Gandalf and the Monkey) moved to their home at the very end of June. They are growing and flourishing with their awesome parents Amanda and Dave.

Finn (nee JuJu) will be moving in with his new mama Kara at the end of July. The funny thing is that every one of the new parents has a PhD (or is in the process of earning one). These had better be some smart cats!

That leaves us to the somewhat sad story of our little Tanner. When we got home from work on Friday the 13th of June, Tanner was walking funny. He didn't seem to be able to lift his hind quarters off the ground very much when he walked. He had been walking well, using the litter box, etc for 2 weeks or so. Within 2 days from our first notice of the weakness, he was dragging his hind legs lifeless behind him. They just dragged along the floor limply while he used his front legs to pull his little body along. Since he could no longer make it into the litter box, we help him pee and poop (in the toilet!) several times a day and also need to bathe him, at minimum, daily. He really hate the whole bathroom bit, screaming and scratching and etc. It is so sad!

BUT, he didn't seem to be in pain or even notice that there was anything all wrong with him. He tried to chase his litter-mates and play with them when he happened to be in close enough proximity. He ate and drank and gained weight at the same rate as the others. We have no idea what caused the problem. The vet took x-rays of him and couldn't see anything wrong. There are lots of possibilities, but it would require a neurologist to possibly make a diagnosis. We adopted a "wait-and-see" approach. We didn't expect any recovery and decided that as soon as he was in pain or unhappy, we would euthanize him. I thought it was a little crazy to take care of an invalid kitten, but had invested too much to put an otherwise happy, healthy cat to sleep. So we slogged through the poop and pee "accidents" and carried on.

About 3 weeks after the initial loss of function, Tanner started to use his legs a little. We were cautiously optimistic that the use would increase. And it has, slowly but surely, he has used his legs more and more. Today, 5 weeks after the "incident," Jason emailed me a video of Tanner almost walking, using his back legs, hind quarters elevated. I am perhaps a little too optimistic at this point that he may make enough of a recovery to be a fairly independent little guy. Anyway, that's the update. Maybe Jason will post the video for all to see.

Twins For Adoption

JuJu and Spot

Spot and JuJu are two sweet boys nearly identical in appearance. They are very close and play together constantly. At sleep time they curl up together with their sister and other brother. In personality, they are both adventurous and energetic, but want to settle down for lap time when they are tired from playing. We hope that a family will adopt both boys together, since they are quite bonded. If you are interested in adopting these beauties, please email me saradozier@hotmail.com. Here are some recent pictures of them. (And, yes, we can tell them apart!)
